WORKSHOPS
These textile experiences are aimed at artists who want to intersect their work with textile materials and techniques. These should be joined by designers, teachers and students as well as the interested public. A set of technical and creative workshops is therefore proposed, providing contact with the techniques of textile materials and tools, as well as with the work developed by artists who will provide knowledge and challenge the use of these reference materials, through experimentation and in line with learn by doing.

Kniting Machine
By Maria David Castro | Oficina das Malhas
The domestic knitting machine, in its most primitive form, was invented in Elizabethan times in England and has come down to the present day after a long technological evolution that has made it lighter and more intuitive.
Fallen into disuse in our country since the mid-1990s, these machines, so widely used until then in the context of small textile production, still provide a unique opportunity for textile experimentation.
Over the course of a day, we’ll get to know and work with knitting machines and familiarise ourselves with some of their potential, making small samples of various fancy stitches and getting to grips with some of the basic procedures for constructing a knitted fabric.
* Maria David Castro, born in Guimarães in 1968, has a degree in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Porto and worked for several years in publishing. She has been dedicated to machine knitting for over 10 years, during this time she has developed the project Oficina das Malhas, focusing at teaching and in small-scale production of knitted garments in 100% Portuguese wool.
