From his early iconoclastic positions on authority and history, which included Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and a series of middle-fi nger salutes to places of power, Study of Perspective (both 1995), Ai Weiwei&#8217;s production has expanded to encompass architecture, public art and performance. <br \/><br \/>Beyond concerns with form or protest, Ai Weiwei now measures our existence against economic, political, natural, and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. Universal symbols of humanity and community, such as bicycles, fl owers and trees, as well as the perennial problems of borders and confl icts, gain renewed strength through installations, sculptures, films and photographs, while Ai Weiwei continues to speak out publicly on issues he considers important. The artist is one of the leading cultural fi gures of his generation and serves as an example for freedom of expression, both in China and internationally. He lives and works in Beijing (China), Berlin (Germany), Cambridge (United Kingdom) and Lisbon (Portugal).<\/p><p>Under the theme &#8220;By a Thread&#8221;, next year CONTEXTILE proposes a refl ection on the current times \u2013 marked by environmental, social and economic crises \u2013 and calls on art as a tool for resistance, care and the construction of new futures. The &#8220;thread&#8221; here is a symbol of the fragility of the world, but also of its capacity for regeneration and reinvention. <br \/>For 85 days, Guimar\u00e3es will be transformed into a true centre of creation and thought, with a diverse programme that includes exhibitions, artist residencies, performances, workshops, meetings, the Textile Talks series, as well as the intervention by Ai Weiwei, the guest artist. Among numerous awards and honours, he received the Praemium Imperiale for sculpture from the Japan Art Association in Tokyo in 2022, won the lifetime achievement award from the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards in 2008 and was made Honorary Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 2011.
