Textile Printing and Painting with Natural Dyes

The use of colours extracted from plants in textile printing is nothing new. On the contrary, artists, designers, craftspeople, or dyers, have been using them for centuries. Building on the basic principles of organic dyeing, the workshop explores the process of preparing mordant pastes for printing—with or without dye—the various binders, and the creation of different shades using modifiers, as well as the controlled removal of colour through discharge printing.

Paper Meets Textile – Experimental Papermaking

This hands-on workshop offers an introduction to historical natural dyeing techniques through the practical exploration of historical recipes and processes. Participants will have the opportunity to work with three of the most significant natural dyestuffs used throughout history (indigo, cochineal, and dyer’s weld), while discovering their properties, applications, and historical importance.
The workshop highlights the technical heritage associated with textile production and encourages reflection on the role of natural dyes in promoting more sustainable practices today.
All materials required for the workshop will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring a plain white 100% cotton T-shirt to dye during the session and take home as a unique memento of the experience.

Unraveling the Color: Natural Dyes

This workshop explores the creative potential of combining pre-prepared cellulose pulp with recycled post-industrial textile materials in papermaking. Through material experimentation, the relationship between cellulose pulp, textile fibres, and fabric fragments is examined, revealing their influence on the paper’s structure, texture, and visual qualities. The session encourages the exploration of sustainable approaches to contemporary artistic practice through the creative reuse of textile materials.
