In 2026, FBAUL’s presence in the “Emergências” exhibition brings together a group of approaches developed by students on the Tapestry course at this institution, reflecting a pathway of learning, experimentation and research centred on contemporary textile language. Grounded in knowledge of traditional techniques, the projects extend them into areas of enquiry where textiles are affirmed simultaneously as material, language and thought. Thread, weave, fabric and gesture become elements of plastic and conceptual construction, giving form to the concerns of a new generation.

To think through textiles is to recognise in thread a component that is at once structural and symbolic: the smallest unit capable of building surfaces, narratives and relationships. If the fabric of the world now bears the marks of fragility, rupture and uncertainty, weaving and sewing re-emerge as gestures of resistance and care. These are gestures that demand time, attention and repetition; gestures that restore connections and reinscribe possibilities for the future.

The natural world and the resonance of its poetics, everyday life, but also the normalisation of violence and the call of bodies that demand attention, form the referential universe of the selected works. Within this body of work, voices attentive to the small transformations and fractures of the present are heard. Among the 13 groups of works, which draw on different techniques and modes of making, two complementary movements stand out: one that listens to silence and to the faint breathing of things; another that makes irony an instrument of critical questioning.

Between delicacy and unease, these works do not seek to offer closed answers. Rather, they inhabit a territory of sensitive resistance, open to transformation, where the possibility of regeneration remains inscribed. Because, despite everything, we continue to believe in a tomorrow that is still human.

At FBAUL, the Tapestry course unit was introduced in the 1957 curriculum of the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. Restructured, it is now an optional module linked to the BA in Painting, though it may also be taken by students from all degree programmes at FBAUL.
