FBAUP is taking part once again in the “Emergências” exhibition of Contextile, reaffirming its growing interest in the textile universe. Starting from the overall theme, “By a Thread”, which invites a profound reflection on us as a species, and consequently on what we build and destroy, on what we do and what we may do individually and collectively, four students from the Master’s in Fine Arts (MAP) were selected, whose works reflect the ongoing interest in this field as a space for experimentation and artistic creation. Taking thread not only as a material component but also as a symbolic and relational element, the four selected sculptural works engage with numerous issues related to the theme, even when they use highly diverse compositional models, techniques and materials that explore the critical, sensitive and poetic possibilities of textile know-how: from the fragility of the systems that sustain life to the capacity of textile practice to foster new ecologies of care, proposing reflective and transformative possibilities. The work “BAMBOLÉ: BY A THREAD”, by Rita Lino, addresses the way in which trust, vulnerability and intimacy function as driving forces that run through artistic practice, shaping how we inhabit the world and relate to others. Raul Cerqueira, with the work “Embalo”, questions the emergence of new relations between the self and the other, the discarded object and the material world, through actions in which care becomes a methodological, affective and relational tool in sculptural practice. Catarina Marques, with the work “Algoritmo 168”, reflects on the presence of computational thinking in art, using algorithmic processes made material through textile techniques. Finally, the work “Manual incompleto para uma endossimbiose imaginativa”, by Beatriz Prazeres, begins from the crossing of fiction, imagination and concepts drawn from the natural sciences to question the boundaries between culture and nature, exploring the ways in which artistic practice can mediate relations between human and non-human, visible and invisible, animal and vegetal, real and fictional. Playing an important unifying role in understanding the relationships woven between Art, Culture, Society and individual positions, textiles – and, in particular, the body of work in this exhibition – point to the multiple interconnections and interdependencies that make up human experience. A relational web is evoked, finding its material form in textile processes and reflecting relationships of proximity, care, transformation and involvement. In this sense, textile practices provide important moments of encounter, in a continuous construction of shared meanings that invite reflection on different forms of coexistence. In the current context, we live with a sense of limit, of being by a thread, in an unease that urgently calls for calm, awareness and real change in attitudes and behaviours guided by the ethical and moral values essential to life.
