PROGRAMME

The programme for this 7th edition will once again be eclectic, featuring a number of activities and events of international scale, where textile is the main element of reference in artistic reflection, research and creation.

After six editions and 10 years of activity, we have adjusted and redefined some aspects for the 2024 edition: we have extended the time scale (now 100 days of biennial), strengthened partnerships with other territories of textile culture, reinforced the work with the community through artistic residencies, reinforcing actions that will highlight the various moments throughout the biennial.

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

In all six previous editions of CONTEXTILE, the International Exhibition assumed a central role in the artistic program and its capacity for global affirmation. The 2024 edition once again exceeded expectations and records for the participation of artists applying to exhibit their works at the Contemporary Textile Art Biennial – 1530 works, by 1300 artists, from 76 countries. The jury, a multidisciplinary team composed of Lala de Dios, Janis Jefferies, Magda Sobon, Cindy Steiler and Cláudia Melo (artistic director of CONTEXTILE), chose 57 works, by 50 artists from 29 countries, around the theme of this 7th. editing, toTOUCH/TOUCH touch.

INVITED ARTIST
Josep Grau-Garriga
"Los hilos de la memoria"

For the first time, the featured artist at the Contextile biennial will receive a unique and singular exhibition. This is Josep Grau-Garriga ((Sant Cugat del Vallès, España, 1929 – Angers, Francia, 2011)), one of the pioneers of contemporary textile art in the Iberian peninsula. Josep Grau-Garriga participated in the II, III and IV editions of the historic Biennale Internationale de la Tapisserie de Lausanne (1965, 1967 and 1969), major references in the development of contemporary textile art and in the tapestry revolution which, abandoning the tradition of mural work, entered the field of expanded sculpture, conquering first volume and then space through the creation of large-scale installations. This exhibition brings together unique and large-scale textile works, produced between 1972 and 1999, whose guiding thread is memory.

INVITED COUNTRY
Canada

Following a partnership, since 2016, with BILP – Biennale internationale du Lin de Portneuf (Quebec/Canada), Contextile 2024 invited BILP to curate a major exhibition of current contemporary textile art in Canada, as a Guest Country. Works by 11 Canadian artists will eloquently demonstrate the propensity of Canadian artists to transgress ancient boundaries to adopt multidisciplinary practices that integrate textile know-how and conceptual approaches associated with more contemporary practices, exploring them in a variety of artistic expressions.

TEXTILE TALKS
Art

A fundamental part of the Contextile 2024 program is based on reflection and debate of ideas, framing textiles and their growing importance and strong presence in artistic events, in the context of international contemporary art. This artistic dimension of textiles in all forms of expression and representation has been explored in Textile Talks, a program for the presentation and discussion of contemporary artistic projects and works.

Participating are Contextile 2024 partners and guests, guest artists and speakers and artists selected through this call. And all those who watch are also invited to participate in the conversations.

The meetings and conversations in 2024 will develop around the theme of this 7th edition of Contextile, TOUCH/Toque.
